VALPARAISO | A meteorology professor at Valparaiso University will present a lecture Monday about global warming, touching on recent trends and forecasting what the future holds.
Craig Clark will address global warning and its effects on hurricanes, droughts, future local weather and the environment.
"When you look at the data, there is a warming trend, particularly in the winter," Clark said. "But there's quite a bit of noise as well."
Noise is the year-to-year variability that is a given, Clark said. Long-term data samples help determine a trend, but within even decade-to-decade comparisons there can be a lot of differences.
Clark, who is working on his dissertation, promised his talk would be "as least technical as possible." His lecture, titled "Future climate change: Known knowns, known unknowns and unknown unknowns," is sponsored by the Valparaiso Chain of Lakes Watershed Group.
"Many of the steps which people can do to reduce global warming also tend to save money and help the environment in general," said Walt Breitinger, president of the watershed group. "We're looking for justification for doing things which will help the environment, which will also be supportive to our local economy."
Clark's talk will begin at 7:15 p.m. Monday in the Porter County administration center, 155 Indiana Ave. Admission is free.
